Men's Shirt Print
12 x 14 in CMYK 1.17:1 portrait
A 12 by 14 in print area for adult t-shirt graphics. The window most direct-to-garment printers can lay ink inside without scaling.

About this size
A shirt design lives inside two constraints the canvas does not show. The first is the print head: most direct-to-garment (DTG) presses can lay ink within a 12 by 14 in area centred on the chest, and anything outside that window gets scaled down or refused at the press. The second is the fabric itself. Cotton absorbs ink differently from polyester, dark fabrics require a white underbase to keep colours vibrant, and high-detail gradients that look crisp on screen turn muddy on a textile substrate.
Designing to the canvas is the easy part. Designing for the print pipeline is what separates shirt artwork that survives from shirt artwork that ships as a sample print and goes back to the drawing board.

Pro tips
- 1 Centre the design horizontally and place the top edge about 3 in below the collar. That is where natural chest placement reads as intentional rather than slid down.
- 2 150 DPI is the right working resolution for DTG. Going higher does not improve ink penetration into fabric, and the file size compounds the print queue.
- 3 Plan the fabric colour first, then design. Bright colours on dark fabric need a white underbase layer; skipping it produces muddy, slightly translucent prints.
- 4 For screen printing, limit the design to a small number of flat colours. Each colour is a separate screen, and complex gradients add cost and unpredictability faster than they add value.
Common mistakes
- Pushing the design out to the edges of the 12 by 14 area. The print head cannot reach the boundaries reliably, and the trimmed result loses what the design was working toward.
- Submitting RGB files. DTG and screen-print pipelines both convert to CMYK or to spot colours, and unsupervised conversion shifts saturated colours visibly.
- Skipping the white underbase on dark fabrics. The colours come out as if they were printed on tissue paper instead of cotton.
Export notes
For DTG, export PNG at 150 DPI in sRGB with a transparent background; the press separates and converts colour itself. For screen printing, export vector PDF or SVG with each spot colour on its own layer named by the Pantone reference, since each layer becomes a separate screen at the press.
Frequently asked
What size should a t-shirt design be?
12 by 14 in for adult chest prints on a standard DTG press. Smaller chest-pocket designs (4 by 4 in or 6 by 6 in) and oversized full-front prints have their own conventions, but 12 by 14 is the safe default.
What resolution for shirt prints?
150 DPI for DTG. Vector files are preferred for screen printing because they scale to any size without losing detail.
Why does my printed colour look different from the screen?
Fabric absorbs ink and shifts colour. Dark fabrics need a white underbase that affects every colour above it. Order a physical sample before committing to a full production run.
