About this size

The 3:2 ratio has been the dominant photography aspect ratio for over a century. 35 mm film established it, the early digital camera market inherited it, and the consumer print ecosystem standardized around it. An unmodified camera file fits the print without cropping, which is why 4 by 6 prints feel natural and other sizes feel cropped.

Pro tips

  1. 1 Maps to standard 4 by 6 photo print proportions. Camera files at 3:2 fit the print without cropping.
  2. 2 Sits between traditional 4:3 (more square) and cinematic 16:9 (wider). A practical default when neither extreme fits.
  3. 3 For portrait orientation, 2:3 is the same proportion rotated. Most camera apps and editing tools handle the conversion automatically.
