About this size

16:9 is the shape that won. Television adopted it in the 2000s. Laptops followed. Phones, when held sideways, behave like little 16:9 displays. YouTube renders almost exclusively at it. Presentation tools default to it. When a design has to work as a slide, a video frame, a thumbnail, and a wallpaper, 16:9 is usually the first canvas to reach for.

Its horizontal bias is both the strength and the trap. The frame supports a clear left-to-right reading path with predictable zones, but a vertical subject placed inside it looks cramped and a centred composition reads as static. The frame wants asymmetry, a horizontal flow, and at least one edge that breathes.

Pro tips

  1. 1 The rule of thirds matters more here than in any other ratio. Centred 16:9 compositions feel posed; thirds-anchored 16:9 compositions feel cinematic.
  2. 2 For surfaces that get displayed across many screens (TVs, projectors, web), reserve at least 5% of every edge as breathable background.
  3. 3 If the design must double as a slide and as a video frame, this is the canvas to start in. Cropping out of 16:9 is easier than designing into it afterwards.
  4. 4 For thumbnails, design for the smallest preview size first. 16:9 at search-result scale is roughly 246 by 138 px; anything that does not read at that size does not read at all.

Common mistakes

  • Rotating a 9:16 vertical composition into 16:9 and expecting it to work. The eye-flow is different, and the focal subject ends up small and centred.
  • Critical text inside the outer 5% of any edge. Many TVs and projectors crop slightly, and the band you trusted disappears.
  • Overfilling the canvas because it is wide. 16:9 rewards restraint; the empty horizontal space is part of why the format reads as cinematic.

Frequently asked

What is 16:9 used for?

Video, slides, thumbnails, wallpapers, modern monitors, and almost any screen-first design. It is the default landscape ratio of the screen era.

Is 1920 by 1080 the same ratio?

Yes. Full HD is one resolution at 16:9. Others include 1280 by 720 (HD), 2560 by 1440 (WQHD), and 3840 by 2160 (4K). All four share the same shape.

How does 16:9 compare to 9:16?

9:16 is the same ratio rotated. Use 16:9 for landscape video, slides, and screen design. Use 9:16 for phone-first vertical content: Stories, Reels, TikTok.
