About this size
Until smartphones, vertical video was a mistake. The format existed only in old film stock and accidental Snapchat clips. Then phones got better cameras, social platforms got vertical-native feeds, and the entire video ecosystem reorganised around 9:16. Stories, Reels, TikTok, Shorts, IGTV, Snapchat, anything full-screen on a phone: 9:16 is the canvas the audience is already holding.
Designing into it requires unlearning two decades of widescreen instincts. The frame is taller than wide, the focal subject benefits from vertical stacking rather than left-to-right composition, and almost every surface that displays 9:16 overlays UI on at least two edges. The reader sees a centre column, not a full rectangle.

Pro tips
- 1 Stack the message top to bottom. Headline near the top third, focal subject in the middle, call to action near the bottom. The eye travels down a vertical frame; lay the content along that path.
- 2 Stay out of overlay zones. Stories, Reels, and TikTok all paint UI on the top and bottom of the canvas. The middle 1300 px of a 1920 px frame is the only band you fully control.
- 3 Type wants to be larger here than in any landscape layout. Mobile is held closer to the eye but consumed faster; small type disappears in the scroll.
- 4 1080 by 1920 px is the practical working resolution. Anything larger gets re-compressed; anything smaller looks soft after the platform converts.
Common mistakes
- Centre-cropping a 16:9 design into 9:16 and calling it done. The vertical frame demands a different composition, not the same composition with the sides removed.
- Putting the call to action where platform UI lives. The bottom of a Story or Reel belongs to captions and a reply bar; a CTA placed there is a CTA the user never sees.
- Desktop-scale typography that disappears on a phone. Design for the screen the viewer will actually be holding.
Frequently asked
What size is 9:16?
1080 by 1920 px is the practical high-quality working size. The ratio itself is the same rotated 16:9, but the conventions are inverted: vertical-first composition, mobile-first scale.
Is 9:16 good for social media?
It is the dominant shape for full-screen mobile content. Stories, Reels, TikTok, Shorts, and Snapchat all default to it. For in-feed posts on most platforms, 4:5 or 1:1 still win.
How is this different from a Story canvas?
It is the same canvas, just unbranded. The Instagram Story template adds platform-specific safe-area data. Use this generic 9:16 for designs that do not target one specific platform.
