About this size

iPad has settled into a category of its own for digital art and teaching. The 4:3 aspect ratio is more forgiving than 16:9 for stacked diagrams, written-out math, and illustration; the resolution is high enough that Apple Pencil strokes preview accurately without subpixel softness; and the final asset displays cleanly in landscape on the actual device.

For teaching content captured to video, designing at iPad-native dimensions removes a scaling step. Whatever the Pencil draws is what the recording shows.

Pro tips

  1. 1 For Apple Pencil work, design at iPad-native resolutions. Stroke previews stay honest and the asset can be played back on the device without scaling.
  2. 2 Use PNG for UI overlays and diagrams; JPEG for photographic illustration where compression artefacts are forgivable.
  3. 3 The 4:3 aspect ratio handles vertical content (lists, diagrams, math) better than 16:9, which is one reason it persists for teaching and illustration.
