About this size

A character sheet (or turnaround) is a planning document for character design. The job is to show how the character looks from every angle so animators, modellers, or other illustrators can work consistently. The standard view order (front, side, three-quarter, back) is industry convention because it matches how the views get referenced during production.

The scale reference is the other half. A height bar or prop in the same scale across all views lets anyone using the sheet match proportions without measuring per view.

Pro tips

  1. 1 Standard order: front, side (usually facing right), three-quarter, back. The convention matches how the views get referenced during production.
  2. 2 Include a height-reference scale and any key prop drawn at the same scale across views.
  3. 3 Lock the line work before adding colour or detail. The sheet is a reference; consistency across views matters more than rendering polish.
