About this size

Pixel art has hard rules that other digital art does not. Every pixel is intentional, anti-aliasing is usually off, and dimensions are typically powers of two because game engines and texture compression both work best with them. The aesthetic depends on those constraints; loosening them produces work that looks like blurry digital art rather than pixel art.

For game asset work, the constraint extends to colour palette. Most pixel art uses a small fixed palette (16, 32, or 64 colours) for visual coherence and engine performance.

Pro tips

  1. 1 Power-of-two dimensions (16, 32, 64, 128, 256) are friendliest to game engines and texture compression.
  2. 2 Disable anti-aliasing in brush settings to keep pixels crisp. Smooth edges break the pixel-art aesthetic immediately.
  3. 3 Limit the colour palette. 16 to 64 colours is the working range; more loses the visual coherence that defines the style.
