Tileable patterns have one absolute rule: the right edge has to match the left, and the top has to match the bottom. Any element that crosses an edge must reappear on the opposite edge at the same position. Patterns that ignore this rule reveal their tile boundary the moment they get repeated.

The test is repetition itself. A pattern that looks fine as a single tile can fail completely at 3 by 3 because visible seams become obvious at scale.

Pro tips

1 Design with edges in mind. The right edge must match the left and the top must match the bottom for seamless tiling.
2 Test the tile by repeating it 3 by 3. Visible seams that are invisible on a single tile become obvious at repeat scale.
3 Watch for unintended diagonals. Repeated patterns sometimes form accidental diagonal stripes the designer did not see in the source tile.
