Comic 4-Panel Grid
Any size with 2 x 2 panel overlay Any size with 2 x 2 panel overlay
A 4-panel comic layout. Two rows of two panels with a margin and gutter, sized to the canvas. The shortest practical page layout that still tells a sequence.
About this size
Four panels is the lower bound for sequential storytelling that breathes. Three panels can land a single beat; four lets the page set up, develop, complicate, and pay off. Webcomics use this format constantly because it fits the half-page horizontal scroll layout cleanly.
The overlay sets the panel borders; the artist still draws inside each one. Margin and gutter are relative to the canvas short edge so the layout looks right whether the canvas is 1080 px wide or 11 by 17 in.

Pro tips
- 1 Four panels rewards strong panel-to-panel transitions. Each panel needs a clear job in the sequence.
- 2 Use the full panel borders as drawn, or treat them as guides and let some panels bleed past for emphasis.
- 3 For webcomics, this layout maps cleanly to the half-page horizontal scroll that most readers expect.
