Comic 6-Panel Grid
Any size with 2 x 3 panel overlay Any size with 2 x 3 panel overlay
A 6-panel comic layout. Three rows of two panels: the most common page layout in mainstream US comics for decades.
About this size
The 6-panel grid is the workhorse of the American comic book page. Three rows, two columns, equal panels, regular gutter. It carries a complete narrative beat (setup / development / payoff) at a comfortable reading rhythm, and the predictable cadence lets the artist break the grid intentionally for emphasis when it matters.
This is the layout most readers internalize as "what a comic page looks like." Working in it is rarely the wrong call.

Pro tips
- 1 The default layout for mainstream sequential storytelling. Reaches for it first; deviate only when the story needs a different rhythm.
- 2 Equal panels create equal weight. To emphasize a moment, break the grid with a panel that crosses the gutter or runs full-width.
- 3 Reading order is strict left-to-right, top-to-bottom. Layouts that try to fight that order confuse readers.
