Comic 9-Panel Grid
Any size with 3 x 3 panel overlay Any size with 3 x 3 panel overlay
A 9-panel comic layout at strict 3 by 3. The Watchmen grid: dense, rhythmic, and unforgiving.
About this size
The 9-panel grid is comics at their most disciplined. Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons used it through all of Watchmen as a counterpoint to the chaos of the story; the regular, almost machine-like cadence forced the art to do all the rhythmic work.
Working at 9 panels per page demands tight composition in each panel. There is no room to waste; every panel has to either advance the story or pay off an earlier setup. It is hard to do well, and it can read as rigid if the artist does not vary panel-to-panel pacing through composition.

- Dense page layouts
- Watchmen-style grids
Pro tips
- 1 The Watchmen grid. Dense, rigid, and rewarding when the story has the discipline to use it.
- 2 Each panel has to carry weight. With nine per page, weak panels are obvious.
- 3 Vary panel-to-panel composition aggressively. The grid is regular; the art inside cannot be.
