about the size of a small icon canvas

About this size

Modern icon pipelines design once at 1024 by 1024 and export downscaled versions for every needed size: iOS app icons, macOS document icons, Android adaptive icons, web favicons, browser tab icons. Designing at the largest size and downsampling produces cleaner small icons than designing at small sizes and upscaling.

The trap is detail that disappears at small sizes. A 1024 by 1024 icon can carry intricate rendering that vanishes entirely at 24 by 24, which is one of the sizes the same file will downscale to. The design has to work across the entire size range, not just at the master dimensions.

  • Large icons
  • Brand assets

Pro tips

  1. 1 Plan how the icon looks at 24 by 24 when designing the master. Detail that disappears at the smallest export size is detail the design cannot rely on.
  2. 2 Avoid sub-pixel details that vanish after downsampling. Strong primary shapes survive; intricate ornament does not.
  3. 3 Export PNG for sharp pixel edges and SVG for resolution independence where the destination supports it.

Export notes

For iOS, export 1024, 180, 167, 152, 120, 80, 76, 60, 40, 29 px PNGs from the same master. For Android, export the master plus the adaptive icon foreground and background layers separately at 432 by 432 px. For web favicons, export 32, 16 px PNGs and a multi-resolution ICO. Generate downscaled assets from the 1024 master rather than re-exporting per size; bicubic downsampling consistently beats per-size redrawing.
