Rule of Thirds Grid
Any size with 3 x 3 overlay Any size with 3 x 3 overlay
A canvas of any size with a rule-of-thirds 3 by 3 overlay for composition planning. The most widely-cited compositional aid in photography and design.
About this size
The rule of thirds divides the canvas into nine equal sections with two horizontal and two vertical lines. The four intersections (and the four lines themselves) are the conventional places to anchor focal subjects. The result is composition that feels balanced without being static, which is why every camera app from iOS to Lightroom ships with the overlay built in.
The rule is a heuristic, not a law. It exists because it works often enough to be useful, and breaking it intentionally is what gives certain compositions their distinctive feel.

Pro tips
- 1 Place focal points along the third lines or at their intersections. The four intersections are the strongest anchor positions.
- 2 Combine with other compositional aids (golden rectangle, diagonals) to compare framings. No single rule covers every composition.
- 3 A heuristic rather than a law. Centring or full-edge composition can be the right choice when the rule of thirds would fight the subject.
