About this size

Perspective construction maps three-dimensional space onto a two-dimensional canvas using vanishing points. One-point perspective puts a single vanishing point at the eye line; two-point uses two horizontal vanishing points; three-point adds a third (above or below) for dramatic vertical foreshortening.

The horizon line position matters more than the number of vanishing points. Anything drawn above the horizon reads as below the viewer's eye; anything below reads as above. Get the eye level right and the perspective sells itself.

Pro tips

  1. 1 One-point for hallway and corridor views; two-point for streetscapes and standard architectural views; three-point for dramatic looking-up or looking-down shots.
  2. 2 Place the horizon line at the eye level of the intended viewer. The horizon position controls how the entire scene reads spatially.
  3. 3 Vanishing points often sit outside the canvas for natural-looking scenes. Construction lines extending past the page edge is normal.
