Facebook treats the cover image as two different surfaces depending on the device. Desktop shows the full 851 by 315 area. Mobile crops up to 80 px from each side and pushes the profile photo over the lower-left corner. A cover that works in both views keeps its focal content centred horizontally and clear of the bottom-left photo cut-out.

Pro tips

1 Anchor the focal subject in the centre 60% of the width. The outer 20% on each side gets clipped on mobile.
2 The profile photo overlaps the bottom-left corner. Either design around it or accept that anything there will be covered.
3 Export sRGB JPEG. Facebook re-encodes uploads, and starting outside sRGB shifts the colours before the cover ever renders.
