Leaderboard Ad

728 x 90 px sRGB 8.09:1 landscape

A 728 by 90 px Leaderboard. The IAB-standard top-of-page banner that has anchored desktop web advertising since the early 2000s.

About this size

The Leaderboard is the ad slot every desktop reader has scrolled past a million times without registering. That ubiquity is the design problem. The format is narrow, the audience has banner blindness trained into them, and the format has 90 px of vertical space (about 70 after padding) to land a logo, a headline, and a call to action.

The formats that work treat the constraint as a clarifying discipline rather than a punishment. One image, one short headline, one CTA, laid out horizontally so the reader can scan it without thinking. Anything more than that loses the half-second of attention the slot ever earns.

Pro tips

  1. 1 Read left to right. Logo on the left, message in the centre, CTA on the right is the canonical pattern because it matches reading direction and finishes with the action.
  2. 2 Typography stays short and bold. There is only about 70 px of vertical space after padding, and thin or italic type disappears at the render size.
  3. 3 One image, one headline, one CTA. Any additional element steals attention from the one element that converts.
  4. 4 Stay inside the byte budget. Most networks cap static leaderboards at 150 KB and animated GIFs at 40 KB. Going over means the ad simply does not serve.

Common mistakes

  • Body-paragraph copy crammed into 90 px tall. The reader sees fuzz, not words.
  • Display fonts that look elegant at 24 pt and disappear at 10 pt. Pick a workhorse face built for small sizes.
  • Animated frames that never resolve. Most networks loop two or three times and then the slot holds whatever frame the loop ended on; design that final frame to make sense on its own.

Frequently asked

What is a leaderboard ad?

The IAB-standard 728 by 90 px horizontal banner, traditionally displayed at the top of a desktop web page. One of the oldest and most widely-supported display formats.

Is leaderboard mobile-friendly?

No. Mobile gets its own formats (Mobile Leaderboard at 320 by 50 px, Mobile Banner at 300 by 50 px). Desktop leaderboards do not scale down gracefully because the horizontal layout breaks below ~600 px wide.

What file size limit applies?

Most ad networks cap leaderboard creatives at 150 KB for static images and 40 KB for animated GIFs. Specific networks (Google Display Network, Meta) publish their own limits, which sometimes differ.
