Instagram

Square posts, 4:5 portraits, Stories, and Reels all live here. Square wins for carousels and grids; 4:5 wins for vertical feed real estate.

Facebook

Cover images render differently on desktop and mobile. The 1200 by 630 post size doubles as the universal Open Graph share image.

X / Twitter

In-feed images render at 16:9; profile headers are wide and short with a profile-photo cut-out in the bottom-left.

YouTube

The thumbnail is the click-decision. Design at 1280 by 720 (16:9), keep critical content out of the bottom-right where the duration badge sits.

TikTok

Vertical 9:16. Right edge covered by the action rail; bottom covered by captions and music tag; keep faces and CTAs in the centre-left.

Pinterest

Pinterest is the only major platform that explicitly favors 2:3 vertical. Square or landscape pins lose feed real estate against 2:3 verticals.

LinkedIn

Feed posts render at roughly 1.91:1. The same canvas works as og:image for LinkedIn link shares.

Frequently asked

Which Instagram size should I post?

Square (1080 by 1080) for carousels and unified brand grids. Portrait 4:5 (1080 by 1350) when a single image needs maximum vertical real estate. Story / Reel 9:16 (1080 by 1920) for full-screen vertical content.

Can I use one image for both Facebook posts and og:image?

Yes. The 1200 by 630 Facebook post size doubles as the default Open Graph image size, so the same canvas serves feed posts on Facebook and link previews across most platforms.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

1280 by 720 px at 16:9. Keep critical content out of the bottom-right where YouTube overlays the video duration badge.

Why does Pinterest insist on 2:3?

Pinterest gives 2:3 (1000 by 1500) pins the most feed real estate. Taller pins get truncated; square or landscape pins get less feed area than 2:3 verticals.

Is TikTok the same size as Instagram Story?

Both use the 1080 by 1920 (9:16) vertical canvas. The overlay zones differ: TikTok's action rail on the right and captions on the bottom-left are larger, so design with both safe areas in mind if you intend to repurpose.
