about the size of a standard movie poster

About this size

The 24 by 36 dimensions are not arbitrary. They are the US theatrical one-sheet, the size every movie poster is designed and printed at, and they are large enough to be the focal point of a room without filling a wall. The format carries that cinematic association whether the design wants it or not.

At this scale, design becomes a question of distance. A 24 by 36 poster gets read from across the room, then walked closer to. Both viewing distances need to work, which is why classic movie posters layer a strong hero image (the across-the-room read) with finer credit blocks and detail (the close-up read).

Pro tips

  1. 1 Design at 300 DPI for clean lettering. The file works out to 7200 by 10800 px, which is heavy but necessary for crisp type at this print size.
  2. 2 Increase type weight for long viewing distance. Thin type that reads at arm's length disappears from across a room.
  3. 3 Plan for two viewing distances. The across-the-room read needs a strong hero; the close-up read can carry detail and credit blocks.
