About this size

At 20 by 30, viewing distance changes. The poster is rarely held in hand or seen from arm's length; it lives on a wall and gets read from six to ten feet away. That changes everything about the design: type weight has to be heavier to survive the distance, focal hierarchy has to be unambiguous, and small detail is mostly invisible.

The other practical constraint is breathing room. Full-bleed designs that feel confident at 11 by 14 often feel cramped at 20 by 30 because the eye expects more margin around a large piece. Leave edge space deliberately.

Pro tips

  1. 1 Plan focal hierarchy at this scale. Viewers see this poster from across a room, and small detail is invisible at that distance.
  2. 2 Leave breathing space at the edges. Full-bleed feels cramped on a large poster in a way it does not on a small print.
  3. 3 Type that reads cleanly at A4 may look thin and frail when blown up. Increase weight at large sizes.
