The 5 by 7 print is the next step up from 4 by 6 in the consumer photo lineup and the most common framed-portrait size at consumer frame stores. The 5:7 ratio is slightly more vertical than 4 by 6, which suits portrait photography better than the cinematic 2:3 of a 4 by 6.
It is also frame-friendly in a way 4 by 6 is not. Off-the-shelf 5 by 7 frames are widely stocked, while 4 by 6 frames are more often found in batch-photo album formats than standalone display frames.
